A Week of Holy Passion

Extreme.

That’s a word that brings to mind such images as mountaintops, whitewater, deep snow with sub-zero cold and hot sand with blistering heat.

I spent two hours this past (week?) just reading and reflecting on the events of Holy Week, and that’s the word that came to mind.

Jesus entered Jerusalem to a cheering crowd.  Coming in, he looked over the city and wept.  On Monday, he raged with righteous anger as he overturned the tables of the money changers.  On Tuesday, he taught with piercing insight using parables with heart-rending images.  On Wednesday he was worshiped with tears and anointed for burial.  On Thursday he celebrated the passover while his disciples argued over who was the greatest and Peter vowed to die with him.  On Friday he prayed so hard he bled, met his betrayer, and was treated with unimaginable cruelty, mockery and contempt.  The day climaxed with darkness in the middle of the day as Jesus breathed his last.  And Sunday brought wonder and joy unimaginable.

Extreme.

We don’t think of our lives as filled with extremes.  Most of our days feature little ups and downs.  But what struck me as I reflected is that Jesus was anything but mundane.  His life was marked by passionate joy and conviction and purpose.

And it struck me he wants the same for us.

At Pilgrim Covenant Church, our vision is to “Be a people responsive to the Holy Spirit, transformed and equipped to serve God’s purpose in the world.”

That’s eternally significant.  That’s extreme! Join us for Holy Week 2017 as we enter into the story.
